Drive setup for Time Machine and file sharing connected to router

Current setup

This is set up to backup daily and I also store ~30Gb of files on it that I don’t often access (long-term storage).

Since the router requires the drive to be formatted to FAT32, I will temporarily move the long-term files to my MBP and then reformat the drive prior to connecting it to the router.

Once the drive has been set up and shared, I will move the long-term files over to the network share. Finally, I will initiate the Time Machine backup over the network.

Question
How should I setup the drive?

  • Partitions – one for the Time Machine backup and one for the files
  • Folders – the Time Machine created Backups.backupdb and the individual folders for the long-term files
