As a part of its AI upgrade, Siri in iOS 18 will reportedly enable control of individual apps through your voice. Apple has supposedly upgraded its voice assistant’s underlying architecture using LLMs to achieve this.
Additionally, Apple will process many basic AI tasks on-device in iOS 18 for faster response and a better user experience.
Siri could open documents, move notes, and more in iOS 18
Multiple reports suggest Apple will give Siri an AI-infused upgrade, making it smarter and more useful. As a part of the overhaul, the voice assistant could have a more conversational voice.
A Bloomberg report details the AI-powered Siri will allow iPhone users to control and navigate the handset with only their voice. “That includes being able to open individual documents, moving a note to another folder, sending or deleting an email, opening a particular publication in Apple News, emailing a web link, or even asking the device for a summary of an article,” says the report.
This could make Siri much more useful in daily life, especially when driving or working out.
Future iOS 18 release will allow Siri to handle more complex voice commands
Siri will initially only handle one voice command, but Apple will allegedly expand its capabilities to chain multiple commands simultaneously. This could open up various use cases, like summarizing a recorded meeting and sending the notes to your work colleague.
The ability to chain multiple Siri commands together won’t be available initially, though. Instead, it will purportedly debut as a part of an iOS 18.x release early next year.
An AI system from Apple will apparently decide to process the voice command locally or on the cloud. For enhanced user privacy, the company will reportedly use servers powered by its own Apple Silicon chips.
Since on-device AI processing requires a powerful NPU, many complex tasks will be limited to the iPhone 15 Pro or newer models. Macs and iPads will need an M1 chip at the bare minimum.
