data synchronization – Stopping iCloud from syncing files that it has no disk space for

My mac (Sonoma 14.2, MacBook Pro) is currently hellbent on syncing 61GB of stuff from iCloud. It doesn’t even have 10 on disk. I added a bunch of .nosync extensions to large files on iCloud, but some of them (in particular, a 23.14GB file) are being ignored. In fact, when I opened the computer, that file had the barred cloud icon, and now suddenly it’s being downloaded. And that file has been on iCloud for ages, and only now is this genius trying to download it. It’s almost like the .nosync extension added today is actually making it sync, completely defeating its purpose. What can I do to knock some sense into this dumb machine?

UPDATE

I don’t know why, but my computer has now changed its mind and is no longer trying to download stuff I don’t want downloaded. I removed all the .nosync extensions, because those, as suggested by a comment, are indeed the opposite of what I want. I restarted a couple times. Now I have 27GB on disk. So being low on space was entirely due to iCloud being stupid.

Hmm. I was posting this as an answer, then it just fell to 25.57, and iCloud is downloading 1 item. Just 1.49GB, so not a big deal. Until it blocks my iCloud backup tonight, that is, if it does…
