This computer I got in February of 2016 has had at least one OS upgrade (current: 10.14.6) and a battery swap (October of 2021). I’m not looking for suggestions to buy a new model such as an M5 or Neo like the Apple shills on Reddit suggests. It’s not really a financially-viable option now and I don’t need such a high-end notebook computer right now.
In late April, it crashed while Discord was open, so I had to power off with the power button as done prior. I was attempting to clear the NVRAM (CMD + Option + P + R). It must now have registered the P that time because it loaded some internet updater with a globe icon. I turned off the computer a bit in and it had boot issues unless I have the external hard drive in despite Disk Utilty finding it and seeing no issues during first aid.
Shift for safe mode triggers a prohibited symbol. Time machine is able to detect the backups and destination. The backups are from 2021, though. Restore got stuck before the verify disk phase and I left it for days because Google said it was normal. I have used disk util functions to check the external hard drive (followed by the system freezing when I exit) after the system had an OS16 error for unmounting the disk for Macintosh HD to be restored there before I reinstall it. I’m wondering if it would work to use some software on a another computer with a docking station after removing the hard drive with a pentalobe screwdriver to get more recent files for Time Machine or if this may simply require another external hard drive.
