I have two HP E243i displays plugged into a USC-C hub which is plugged into an M1 Pro MacBook Pro running macOS 15.5. One of the displays works fine. It shows up in System Settings > Displays as an HP E243i display, with a variety of available resolutions, including the correct default of 1920 x 1200.
However, the second display, even though it is also an HP E243i, shows up in system settings with no name and with only two available resolutions, 1280 x 720 (the default for some reason) and 1920 x 1080.
Since this is a 1920 x 1200 display, either of these two resolution settings (which are not even the correct aspect ratio) are visibly stretched.
Things I have tried:
- Swapping the HDMI cables
- Plugging directly into the laptop
- Factory reset on the display
- Restarting the laptop
Nothing gets macOS to make 1920 x 1200 available for the display. Weirdly, one particular combination of hub/port does get the broken display to show up with a name “1080p60” and with additional resolution options, but still not 1900 x 1200.
The two displays are the same model but do have a different Rev/Firmware version. The broken one is AVM121 while the working on is DIM111. That said, there are other AVM121 displays in my office, and those all work fine, so I don’t think that difference is relevant.
Using Display Port instead of HDMI is not an option. Replacing the whole display might be an option, but I would rather avoid it if I could.
So anyone have any ideas? Either a way to fix macOS or this display or to workaround the issue and force macOS to use it as 1920 x 1200?
