With the speed of AI-generated code and the quality and security teams overwhelmed by the avalanche, engineers who need to be dialed in to what’s happening at all times now don’t have to look any farther than their cellphones.
Today, OpenAI announced Codex for mobile devices, launching as a preview in the ChatGPT mobile app, that enables teams from anywhere to respond to bug reports away from their desks, or respond to Codex decision points, or flesh out an idea while they’re out of the office, among other use cases.
In a blog post, OpenAI wrote: “This is more than the ability to remotely control a single task or dispatch new tasks to your computer. From your phone, you can work across all of your threads, review outputs, approve commands, change models, or start something new. Your files, credentials, permissions, and local setup stay on the machine where Codex is operating, while updates flow back to your phone in real time, including screenshots, terminal output, diffs, test results, and approvals.”
With many teams already developing inside managed remote environments that provide approved dependencies, credentials, security policies, and compute resources, those environments can be accessed across your authorized ChatGPT devices through the same secure relay infrastructure. According to the company, “the desktop app automatically detects hosts from your SSH configuration,” which lets users work from anywhere just as they would as their desks. This capability allows for scenarios such as starting a project on your desktop, manage that work from a phone and more, without staying tied to one machine.
OpenAI also announced Codex capabilities for running, extending, and managing agentic work at scale, including Remote SSH, Hooks, programmatic access tokens for business and enterprises, and HIPAA-compliant use of Codex for eligible ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces.
Codex in the ChatGPT mobile app is being previewed on iOS and Android devices in all supported regions. The company also said that connecting a phone to the Codes app on Windows “is coming soon.”
Remote SSH and Hooks are available on all plans as well. Programmatic access tokens are available on Enterprise and Business plans. HIPAA-compliant use is supported for eligible ChatGPT Enterprise workspaces only when Codex is used in local environments.
