Matter and Zigbee are frequently presented as direct competitors because both appear on smart-home products. Technically, they sit differently in the stack. That difference explains why “Should I replace all my Zigbee devices with Matter?” is usually the wrong first question.

What Zigbee is
Zigbee combines a low-power mesh network with standardized device behavior. It has been deployed for years in lighting, sensors, switches, plugs and many other home-automation products. Mains-powered Zigbee devices can typically route mesh traffic, while battery devices remain lightweight end devices.
A Zigbee network normally has a coordinator, often built into a hub or bridge. That coordinator manages the network and provides the path into the user-facing platform.
What Matter is
Matter defines a common IP-based application layer for supported smart-home devices. Instead of requiring every ecosystem to understand a completely separate proprietary data model, Matter creates standardized device types, commissioning behavior and interactions that participating ecosystems can use.
The important phrase is IP-based. Matter can use Wi-Fi or Ethernet directly, and low-power Matter devices can use Thread, which is itself an IPv6 mesh network.

Does Matter replace Zigbee?
No immediate replacement is necessary. Existing Zigbee networks can continue to provide reliable local automation for years. Matter does not make a working Zigbee motion sensor technically obsolete.
The more useful question is whether a new device gives you a meaningful advantage: better interoperability, direct support in additional ecosystems, improved features or easier commissioning.
Where Matter is strongest
- Cross-ecosystem interoperability: Matter is explicitly designed to reduce platform silos.
- IP integration: Matter operates over familiar IP transports rather than requiring an application gateway for every network technology.
- Multi-admin use: supported devices can be shared with more than one ecosystem.
- Common device models: platforms can implement consistent behavior for standardized device types.
Where Zigbee is still excellent
Zigbee remains compelling for inexpensive low-power sensors, lights, switches and large established device ecosystems. The technology is mature, widely implemented and designed around low-power mesh behavior.
A home with dozens of reliable Zigbee devices has little to gain from replacing them solely for a protocol label.
Do Matter devices need a hub?
Matter needs a controller in the ecosystem you use. Matter-over-Thread devices also need Thread connectivity through a Thread Border Router. Matter-over-Wi-Fi products use the home Wi-Fi network instead. Many consumer hubs and smart speakers combine more than one of these roles.
Do Zigbee devices need a hub?
Usually, yes: a Zigbee coordinator is required to form and manage the Zigbee network. Consumer products often package that coordinator into a bridge or smart-home hub.
How bridges connect old and new systems
A bridge can expose devices from an established Zigbee ecosystem into Matter. From the Matter controller’s perspective, the bridge represents supported device functions using Matter, while the physical sensor or bulb continues communicating over Zigbee behind the bridge.
This is one of the strongest reasons not to rip out working infrastructure. A bridge can preserve a mature low-power network while improving cross-platform access.
Which is better for battery sensors?
Zigbee has a long track record with low-power sensors. Matter-over-Thread is the newer IP-native approach aimed at similar low-power use cases. In 2026, both can be valid choices. The surrounding ecosystem, device quality, Border Router/hub infrastructure and vendor support matter as much as the logo.
Which is better for lights and switches?
Zigbee remains extremely strong for dense lighting networks because mains-powered bulbs and plugs can participate in the mesh. Matter devices may use Thread or Wi-Fi depending on the product. If you already have a reliable Zigbee lighting system, there is no technical need to replace it merely to “move to Matter.”
What about local control?
Both technologies can support local smart-home operation. Matter’s IP design does not mean every vendor feature is automatically local or cloud-free; apps, voice assistants and manufacturer services may still add cloud dependencies. Zigbee systems can also be very local, depending on the hub and automation platform.
Should you replace Zigbee devices?
Usually no. Replace hardware when you gain a useful feature, fix a real reliability problem or simplify an ecosystem that has become hard to maintain. Protocol churn by itself is not a good reason to generate electronic waste.
Which should you choose for a new purchase?
- Choose Matter when cross-platform compatibility is a priority and the device implementation is mature.
- Choose Zigbee when you already have a strong coordinator/mesh and the device fits that ecosystem well.
- For low-power new builds, compare Matter-over-Thread with Zigbee rather than Matter in the abstract.
- Check whether your controller, hub or Border Router already supports the technology before buying.

Mesh behavior: similar goal, different architecture
Both Zigbee and Thread can create low-power mesh networks, but Thread carries IPv6 natively while Zigbee uses its own networking/application stack. That architectural difference becomes important when integrating devices into broader IP networks. Matter over Thread stays IP end-to-end; Zigbee normally reaches IP-based ecosystems through a coordinator/bridge.
What happens if the hub or Border Router fails?
A Zigbee network depends on its coordinator for network management, while routing among devices can continue within the mesh. Thread is designed without a single routing point of failure, and a home can have multiple Border Routers. In practice, user control may still depend on controllers, bridges and apps, so “mesh redundancy” is not the same as complete system redundancy.
Device quality matters more than protocol labels
A poorly supported Matter product can be a worse purchase than a mature Zigbee device, and the reverse is also true. Look at firmware support, reset behavior, ecosystem compatibility and documented local functionality. Protocol choice narrows the architecture; it does not guarantee product quality.
A migration strategy that avoids waste
- Keep stable Zigbee devices that already do their job.
- Choose new Matter devices where multi-ecosystem access is valuable.
- Prefer a bridge that can expose existing Zigbee devices into Matter when it reduces app fragmentation.
- Replace legacy hardware only when reliability, security or missing features justify it.
