Before I head out to fly my FPV drones, I always go through this checklist to ensure everything is in order. I’ve found this routine incredibly helpful and think it could benefit many others. That’s why I’m sharing it here. Feel free to print this checklist for your FPV backpack or save it to your smartphone bookmarks for quick access.
Why Bother?
Although it’s tempting to skip pre-flight checks, especially when you’re eager to get out and fly, taking the time to go over your gear can save you from frustrations later. Missing a simple check can lead to issues that might cut your flight session short. Trust me, many fellow pilots and I have learned this the hard way. Ensuring everything is set before you leave can prevent wasted time and spoiled days due to preventable mishaps.
Pre-Flight Checklist
- Weather Conditions: Is it rainy or too windy?
- Battery Voltage: Ensure all batteries you need are fully charged.
- Propeller Checks:
- Ensure propellers are properly mounted and the prop nuts are securely fastened.
- Check for any bends or damage to the propellers, changed them if necessary so you won’t waste time in the field
- Quick Drone Inspection:
- Verify all screws on the frame and motors are present and secure.
- Check for any noticeable damage on the frame – try bending the arms with your hands to ensure there’s no play.
- VTX Antenna: Confirm the antenna is installed if previously removed.
- Radio and Drone Power:
- Turn on the radio to confirm it’s working properly. Charge it if the battery is low.
- Power on the drone and do a test hover.
- FPV Goggles:
- Ensure you get a clear image and it’s set to the correct channel.
- Double check image/camera settings in the goggles (necessary for DJI and Walksnail systems)
- Ensure SD card is there for DVR, and it’s recording.
- Charge goggles battery.
- HD Camera Checks:
- If using a GoPro or similar, ensure it’s charged and recording.
- Verify the presence of an SD card in your DJI O3 or Walksnail Moonlight.
Necessary Tools and Spares
- Extra Micro SD Cards for goggles and HD camera
- Hex screwdriver for frame and FPV camera screws
- Spanner for replacing props (for the prop nuts)
- Spare battery straps and propellers
- Extra zip ties, electrical tape, and rubber bands
- Scissors and a pair of pliers
- Portable soldering iron and solder wires
- Water and tissues for cleaning
- Spare screws (for FPV camera, frame, motors) and prop nuts

After Flight Session
After getting home, always return your batteries to their storage charge (3.80V-3.85V per cell), regardless of whether they were used or not. This practice helps maintain battery health and longevity.
