What this Wi-Fi troubleshooter checks
Wi-Fi problems often look identical even when the real causes are different. A low speed test can come from the internet connection, a slow router uplink, weak radio coverage, interference, poor mesh backhaul or one problematic client. Replacing the router before identifying the layer can therefore spend money without changing the result.
This tool starts with the symptom and asks only a few high-value questions. Its job is not to replace a professional RF survey. It is designed to tell you which hypothesis deserves testing first and which purchase is least likely to help.
How to read the diagnosis
Internet / WAN path
If Ethernet or Wi-Fi beside the router is already slow, room coverage is not the first problem. Check modem or ONT status, router WAN/LAN link rates and the ISP baseline.
Coverage / building loss
If performance is good near the router but poor in one room or upstairs, distance and construction become the leading suspects. Dense floors, masonry and metal can matter more than the Wi-Fi generation.
Wireless mesh backhaul
A satellite can show a strong signal to your phone while still having a weak upstream link to the primary node. In that case, backhaul sets the effective ceiling.
Single-client problem
If other devices work normally in the same place, start with the affected device. Drivers, antenna capability, VPNs, power saving and band choice can create a local problem.
Typical Wi-Fi scenarios
Fast beside the router, slow upstairs
This pattern strongly suggests a coverage-path problem. Test at the bottom and top of the stairs to find where performance falls. If Ethernet reaches the upper floor, a wired access point or Ethernet-backed mesh node is usually more predictable than repeating the same weak radio path.
Everything is slow
Start with a wired or near-router test. If the baseline is also poor, troubleshoot the internet path first. If the baseline is good, move outward room by room until you find where performance starts to collapse.
Only one phone or laptop is slow
Do not redesign the network around one client before comparing another device in the same location. The affected device may be using an older Wi-Fi generation, a congested band or problematic driver and power-management settings.
Mesh satellite is much slower than the main router
Check whether the node uses wireless or Ethernet backhaul. A satellite placed inside the dead zone may simply repeat a weak upstream link. Move it toward the last strong point or wire it if practical.
What the tool does not measure
The result cannot see your actual signal strength, channel utilization, packet loss, neighboring networks or building materials. For difficult homes, measure several positions with the same client and change one variable at a time. Treat the diagnosis as a prioritization tool, not a laboratory measurement.
